Holland, tournament favorites?

Holland was ranked first overall by FIFA at one point in 2011 even though they’ve never won a World Cup. They’ve come close on three separate occasions by being runners up in the World Cup Final in 1974, 1978, and 2010. They’ve appeared in nine World Cup tournaments overall. When it comes to the European Championships, they’ve qualified for the event eight times and were crowned champions in 1988. This time they will be one of the clear favorites for many punters winner betting of the Euro 2012 tournament.

Denmark has played in four World Cups with their best finish coming in 1998 when they made it as far as the quarterfinal stage. They’ve had more success in the European Championships and won the event in 1992 when the country was a late replacement for Yugoslavia. Denmark had finished second in the group to Yugoslavia in the qualifying stages and failed to make Euro 1992. However, 10 days before the tournament began Yugoslavia was banned from the event due to war in the country and Denmark was given their spot.

Group of Death…

With Germany and Portugal also playing in Group B, this is the toughest group of the Euro 2012 tournament. Every point is going to be valuable and hard to come by. Holland definitely has more elite players and depth than Denmark, but it’s still going to be a tough test for the Dutch. They met each other in the 2010 World Cup in South Africa with Holland taking a 2-0 win. Their previous meeting was a friendly in Holland in 2008 and ended in a 1-1 draw.

The Dutch have some of the world’s top stars in Arjen Robben, Wesley Sneijder, Rafael van der Vaart, and Robin van Persie. Denmark also has some fine players in the likes of Christian Poulsen, Daniel Agger, Christian Eriksen, Nicklas Bendtner, and Dennis Rommedahl.

The Dutch are in a bit of a tailspin though and are winless in their last three games up until Nov. 15th. Overall, in their past five games they have won two, lost two and drawn one. Denmark, on the other hand, has won five in a row up until Nov. 15th. In 28 games against each other, Holland has won 12, lost six and the other 10 have ended in draws with Holland outscoring the Danes 57-36.
