France vs England Preview Euro 2012
France vs England Preview Euro 2012 11th June
The first Group D match of Euro 2012 will see England take on their arch enemy France in a huge game to kick things off at Donbass Arena, Donetsk on June 11th. England qualified for the European Championships by topping Group G in the qualifying rounds. They finished unbeaten with 18 points from five wins and three draws, six points ahead of second-place Montenegro. Betting on this game is not easy and we will see some pretty even odds.
France managed to win Group D by just one point over Bosnia, and drew them 1-1 at home in the final qualifier. They finished with 21 points from six wins, three draws and a loss. These two teams have a very long history with each other both on and off the football pitch.
England to underachieve once again?
England has long been considered to be one of the top footballing nations in the world even though they usually don’t play their best football at major tournaments. The exception to this came in 1966 when they won the World Cup at home with a 4-2 win over West Germany in extra time. They have appeared in 13 World Cups in total, with their next best finish being fourth place in 1990. They have also appeared in seven European Championships with their best finishes being third place in 1968 and reaching the semi finals at home in 1996. They didn’t qualify for the last event in 2008.
England and France have met a total of 28 times on the football pitch with England holding a 16 to eight edge in wins with four games ending in draws. They’ve outscored France 65-35 along the way. However, they’ve had a hard time with France over the past few years and lost by a goal to the French in 2008 and 2010.
France has also struggled in major tournaments over the last few years and the country was embarrassed at last year’s World Cup in South Africa when the players went on strike and ended up going winless in their three games. However, they’ve appeared in 13 World Cups over the years and won it in front of their home fans in 1998 with a 3-0 win over Brazil in the Final and were runners up in 2006. They’ve played in seven European Championships and won the event at home in 1984 and in Belgium and Holland in 2000.
The big story in this game at the moment is that England striker Wayne Rooney will have to sit it out due to suspension. He’ll also miss his country’s second match, which is against Sweden. However, England has some young strikers such as Daniel Sturridge, Danny Welbeck and Bobby Zamora waiting in the wings. Both teams have numerous world-class players in their line ups and this should be a hard-fought close affair that ends in a draw or a one-goal win for England.
