Euro 2012 Group B
Euro 2012 Group B is known all over Europe as the tournament’s group of death since it consists of four of the continent’s best teams in Denmark, Portugal, Holland, and Germany. Each game in this group is going to be a special occasion and points are going to be very valuable and hard to come by. Going into the tournament, Germany appears to be the strongest of the teams with Holland being a close second. Portugal and Denmark have also met a lot lately and there isn’t much separating the two sides. Germany is the favourite since they managed to win every one of their 10 qualifying matches.
Group B kicks off with Holland taking on Denmark at Kharkiv’s Metalist Stadium on June 9th. Holland qualified by topping Group E in the qualifiers by winning nine games and losing one for 27 points. Denmark topped Group H by winning six, drawing one and losing one.
Holland hasn’t won for long…
At one point in 2011 FIFA had Holland ranked number one in the world. They’ve never lifted the World Cup, but made it to the final game in 1974, 1978, and again 2010. They’ve played in nine World Cups and eight European Championships and won Euro 1988.
Denmark has participated in the World Cup four times and made it to the quarterfinals in 1998. However, they won the European Championships in 1992 as a replacement nation for Yugoslavia. They were added to the event 10 days prior to the kickoff when Yugoslavia was dropped due to the war in the nation.
Germany will be taking on Portugal also on June 9th at Arena Lviv. The Germans won their qualifying group in a cakewalk by winning all 10 games and finished 13 points ahead of Turkey, who came in second. They are a clear favorite for the trophy in our Euro 2012 betting and probably many others…
Portugal placed second in Group H by winning five games, drawing one and losing two for a total of 16 points. They finished tied for second with Finland, however made it to the playoff round because they possessed a superior goal difference. Portugal then faced Bosnia and Herzegovina and managed to beat them 6-2 on aggregate with all of the scoring coming in the second leg in Portugal.
Germany is a powerhouse in world football. The nation was split into West and East up until 1990 when they joined together to form the current German team. Germany has played in the World Cup 17 times and won it in 1954 as well as in 1974 and 1990. They lost in the final game on four other occasions, most recently in 2002. They’ve also lifted the European Championships three different times, in 1972, 1980, and 1996. They lost in the final game on three other occasions, the last time in 2008.
Portugal’s had a strong team for years, but hasn’t had much success on the world stage. They’ve played in the World Cup five times with a third-place finish in 1966 being their best. Portugal has also competed in the European Championships five times and lost in the final game to Greece in 2004 when Portugal hosted the event.
